Regularly committing minimal speeding violations also greatly increases the likelihood of an accident. In fact, drivers who are fined five times a year for a minor traffic violation are 10 times more likely to have an accident. With notorious speeding drivers, the risk is even greater.
“People with more violations show risky driving behavior,” said traffic expert Henk Stipdonk of the Foundation for Scientific Research on Traffic Safety (SWOV) in the AD.
Risk
Notorious “much-too-hard drivers,” who exceed the limit by more than 10 mph, pose the greatest risk on the road. Those who receive 10 fines, one of which is for a major violation, are 100 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
Stipdonk: “This group is small, but proportionally involved in a large number of accidents.”
